Ok, since I can't sleep: Circles.
\nCircles are the central unit of Kowloon's architecture. Think of them like playlists, but of people and servers (and groups eventually). You can create a Circle and add as many people to it as you like. You can even add an entire server to a Circle by adding it like @kwln.city. But nobody can see any of your Circles unless you make them public. And nobody is notified or informed that they're in your Circle. (If it's public, they can see that, of course.) So you can make Circles with names like \"Colleagues Who Aren't Friends\" and not worry about hurting anyone's feelings (as long as, again, you don't make them public).
\nThere are three basic but different functions for Circles:
\n1: To address any Post or Bookmark or even another Circle to. That means that only the people (not servers) you've added to that Circle can see that Post or Bookmark or Circle. Think of it like a bcc in email. But anyone in that Circle will only see posts addressed to it if they follow you or look at your feed. Why? Because it's impossible to spam people by adding everybody to a Circle and posting a bunch of shit addressed to it.
\n2: You can share Circles publicly the same way you can share streaming music playlists, and for a similar reason: to share interesting people with others. You'll notice that if you look at anyone else's public Circles, there's a \"Save Circle\" button. This lets you create a copy of their Circle in your own Circles, like cloning a playlist. (Your copy doesn't update when theirs does, sorry - that'll be in an upcoming release.) This is how we discover new and interesting shit on Kowloon instead of a algorithm.
\n3: Look at the top of your Feed page. You see where it says \"Community Posts\"? Click on that and if you've created any Circles, you'll see them in a list (with a search bar for if you have a lot). Click on one. Now your feed is posts from any users or servers you've added to that Circle - if you've added a server you see all public posts to that server in a firehose. So you can create a Circle of \"My Favorite Musicians\" and add any of your favorite artists who are on Kowloon, and you'll only see posts from those artists. (If you just want Media posts, tap the middle blue icon to the right of the feed picker, which will filter your timeline to only show Media posts.)
\nI'm going to write up a detailed tutorial tomorrow, but does any of this make sense? Do you get the point of and value of Circles and see what a powerful tool they are? Or is it still confusing?
\nIf so, tell me and I'll figure out a clearer way to explain them. It's important people get them, because they really are the core paradigm of Kowloon.
